To put a simple present or simple past verb into the negative form, you must know if you are using a “be” verb or another verb.

Other verbs

Simple present: use Do/Does + NOT + Base verb

I have two beds.                                        I do not have two beds.

She wants to rent the apartment.           She does not want to rent the apartment.

Why do we say, “I don’t want” but “she does not want”?

Simple past: Use Did + NOT + Base verb

The apartment had hot water.                   The apartment did not have hot water.

The girls signed a lease.                            The girls did not sign a lease.

Sebastien works in a restaurant and makes a lot of money. He can afford an expensive apartment. Carl plays guitar and spends all of his money on instruments. He hopes to find a job. Last year, Carl lived with his aunt and uncle. Carl owns a fridge, stove, and microwave oven. Sebastien has two beds and other furniture.
