Grammar

There are two grammar segments in this unit.

The expression il y a can be used to name something. In English, we say

There is + singular noun or non-count noun.

                  There is a student in the room. There is some homework.

There are + plural noun.

                  There are three apples on the teacher’s desk.

Questions in the simple present

Reading

Read the text and do the exercises that follow.

Zoé wants to play a game with her new friend, Stella. The game is “Guess Who?” Stella does not know how to play the game, so Zoé explains the rules. One player writes the name of a famous person on a card and gives it to another student. The student who receives the card cannot look at it but has to try to guess who the famous is by asking yes or no questions.

Some of the questions are “Am I a man?” or “Am I a woman?” Some people also ask “Am I an athlete?” or “Am I a musician?” Other popular questions include, “Do I live in Canada?” “Am I alive?” “Am I tall?”

Zoé and Stella play the game for 5 minutes and then Isaac wants to play with them. He is good at guessing the names of famous people.

Isaac is learning how to play guitar and plays a song for the girls. They think that he has a lot of talent.
