Understanding questions

What is an auxiliary? An auxiliary is a helper to show the verb tense, the mood, or the voice. Generally, they come before the main verb in a sentence. Sometimes, auxiliaries do not have a real meaning in a sentence. Furthermore, some auxiliaries like “be,” “do,” and “have” are auxiliaries and main verbs depending on the sentence.

Reading activity: Read the dialogue out loud and practice saying the vocabulary words.

Lisa: Hey Abdiel, I’m so excited to tell you about winter sports adventures in Quebec. I tried so many when I was there last year!

Abdiel: What did you do there?

Lisa: I loved skiing and skating on the icy lakes. It was amazing!

Abdiel: That sounds incredible. Did you wear a lot of warm clothing? My mother says that it is cold in Quebec in the winter.

Lisa: Yes, it was freezing! But I wore a tuque, mittens, a scarf, and extra socks to stay warm. My friend gave me a thick coat.

Abdiel: Did you try any other winter activities?

Lisa: Actually, I tried tobogganing. It was so much fun!

Abdiel: I don’t know what that is, but it sounds fantastic! Did you have any hot soup to warm up afterwards?

Lisa: No, I had something better! My friends gave me hot chocolate. It’s the perfect way to warm up and relax.

Abdiel: Yummy! Hot chocolate. I think I want to go to Quebec.
