Grammar

Quantities with count and non-count nouns

Count nouns are things (place, people, things) that we can count. These words are singular (cat) or plural (cats) and can be regular or irregular.

Non-count nouns are things that we cannot count. An example is the word “homework.” We cannot say one homework, two homeworks. Some common non-count nouns include homework, information, advice, money, time*, furniture, luggage, love, etc.

Showing quantity: These words can help you quantify nouns. There are others.

Count:
a, an, many, a lot of, several, one, two, three, etc.

Non-count:
some, a piece of, a lot of, two pieces of, much, a little, etc.

  •  She has two pieces of homework.
  • I don’t have much money in my wallet.
  • How much time do you need to complete your exam?
  • She offered me some advice.

Notice that with much, we use a negative or a question.
