Grammar

Using basic punctuation with FANBOYS.

FANBOYS: Use this acronym to help you write better sentences.

FOR         AND          NOT         BUT        OR       YET         SO

For (meaning because)
Yet (meaning pourtant)

To join two complete sentences together with a (,) – a comma – you can put a FANBOY between the two sentences.

Let’s practice:

Example:

I like cats and dogs. I do not like snakes.

I like cats and dogs, but I do not like snakes.

Sally went to bed early last night. She was very tired.

Sally went to bed early last night, for she was very tired.

Choosing a career is hard for young people. There are many jobs to choose from. High school and CEGEP students often don’t know what they want to do. They worry about making the wrong choice. They think about money, job security, and happiness. This can be very stressful.

There are many places to get help. Guidance counselors can give advice about careers. They can help students find their strengths. Parents and teachers can share their work experience. Friends and family members can also help.

The internet has useful information about different jobs. Websites show what skills you need for each career. Young people can try internships to learn about jobs. Internships give real work experience.

Universities have career centers that help students. These centers teach students how to write resumes and find jobs. Some people hire career coaches for extra help. Mentors can guide young people too.

Getting advice from these sources makes career decisions easier, so young people should not be afraid to ask for help.
