Grammar
As a general rule, we use the basic prepositions of place and time – in, on, at – this way:
- “In” is more general: I live in Quebec. The gig is in London. We will meet in a week.
- “On” is more specific: The show is on Tuesday night. He lives on Champlain Street.
- “At” is the most specific: The class starts at 2:25 p.m. He works at 184 Main Street. We like to travel at Christmas.
We can combine the prepositions in sentences.
- She lives in Alma on Beauregard Street. Her house is at number 26.
IN:
- city, town, country, province, etc.
- future time
- specific year (past or future)
- … the morning, the afternoon, the evening
- names of months
ON:
- street name
- names of days
- media (TV, radio, internet, Netflix, etc.)
- the day of a holiday (ex: On Christmas Day)
AT
- specific street numbers
- specific times
- … night
- a building or specific area
- specific holiday periods (ex: Christmas, Halloween, etc.)
Other prepositions:
To – we use to to show movement.
We are going to Tadoussac next weekend.
She takes her bike to school whenever the weather is nice.
From – from is used to show the departure point.
My Spanish teacher is from Columbia.
We took the bus from our hotel to the museum.
Prepositions are hard to learn. One way to practice is to listen carefully to conversations, music, etc. Mindful reading is also a good method. Of course, speaking with people and asking them to point out your errors works well.
